FLOATING DUCK NESTS

Whether floating or on the bank a duck nest is the duck world’s equivalent of a bird nesting box. Wild ducks will be inclined to use the house for nesting and perhaps as a safe night roost. Please remember that being wild for the most part the ducks will come, take full advantage of your hospitality, rear their young and go, so don’t take it personally.

TETHERED OR ANCHORED.

Rather than being able to travel up and down the water, ideally the nest needs to be held in one location and away from the bank. If the pond size permits, the nest can be chained from two points on opposite banks. (see options below) On larger ponds or lakes it will be necessary to anchor the house in mid water. We favour mud weights which are 20kg lumps that embed themselves into the bottom sludge. (see options below)

IN THE BEGINNING.

Mess it up! Ducks need to feel this is a mud island, so make it smell right, a few handfuls of messy reeds and a splodge of bank mud in the nesting areas would not go a-miss. I have been told (but not tried) that to get ducks to use a new nest box line the floor with a damp turf, green side down.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE

Some folks will have an instinct to treat their duck house as they would a chicken coop and clean practically weekly. For those folks I have good news, We are trying to encourage wild creatures to use what to them will be perceived as an unconventional nesting site, and ducks are comfortable with their own mess, so leave the duck house well alone.

Suggest you clean once a year in the late summer. The internal walls in the EPSOM’S are removable giving extra access. Remove most, but not all the debris, it is not necessary nor desirable to wash out the house.

RE-TREAT:

Although the timber we build with is pressure treaded or marine grade and will last many years, we still think it prudent once in a while to apply a re-treatment. I have personal used this treatment on my housing, and can highly recommend it:

  • STOPS WATER DEGRADATION -

Forms a water shedding coating that stops water ingression which encourages wood rot.

  • CAN BE APPLIED TO WET WOOD -

No waiting for that elusive dry day when you have time and the wood is dry.

  • MICRO POROUS -

    Allows the wood to ‘breath’.

  • TRANSPARENT -

Has a milky colour when applied but dry’s clear, so OK to apply liberally without leaving brush or run marks.

  • SUITABLE FOR ANIMAL HOUSING -

And says as much on the label!

PLEASE NOTE:

NO TREATMENT SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO LEACH INTO THE WATER

DO NOT TREAT THE FLOAT

TREAT THE HOUSE & ROOF ON THE BANK

INSURE THE TREATMENT IS FULLY DRY BEFORE RE-LAUNCHING
