TORTOISE ARK (NEW AUG 2019)
The TORTOISE ARK is traditional format of housing combining the house and the run inline. This is a tried and much tested design that has been in our catalogue from when we started in 1979. Its prime purpose back then was as a broody ark (hen with chicks), but we’ve sold many times more for rabbits and guinea pigs, when on all counts security is a major issue. So thought it sensible to make a tortoise version.
Both the run and house have large side doors to enable catching and cleaning. The run has a covered section providing much needed (but often forgot) shade and shelter. A small fixed ramp across the threshold allows ease of access in and out of the house. Carrying handles fixed to the ridge make moving less of a chore.
TORTOISE ARK FEATURES and MATERIALS
Clad in 20mm thick, pressure treated, joinery grade red pine shiplap boards. There is also cladding at the far end of the run giving the tortoise much needed shade and shelter.
All clad with 12mm thick, pressure treated, joinery grade, red pine tongue and grooved boards. We have deliberately not put doors in the outer gables instead we have fixed boards (glued & pined) to ensure no predator access. The integral house front gable has a securable tortoise friendly door with a fixed small ramp across the threshold.
Both the house and run areas have full size, securable, doors. The doors are top hung so natural resting position is SHUT!
Breather vents are set into both the front and back house gables.
Solid 12mm thick MARINE grade ply so impervious to ‘wee’.
Handles at both ends of the ridge, make repositioning far less of a chore.
THE TORTOISE ARK RANGE
TORTOISE ARK 180.
Run 7.5cm x 120cm. House section 7.5cm x 40cm.
TORTOISE ARK 210.
Run 100cm x210cm. House section 7.5cm x 40cm.
THE TORTOISE ARK OPTIONAL EXTRAS
A permanently fixed 0.7x1.2mt run, doubling the total run area. Also has an additional catching door
Heavy-duty clear strip curtains, gives protection without diminishing natural light.
The house sides, floor and gables are lined with Thermal-Foil-Insulation, which not only insulates but also forms a vapour barrier. The insulation is protected on the inside with a ply over-liner.
A removable glazed (Perspex) panel that’s set into the wire door, gives additional protection, without compromising the light.
Although the timber we build with is pressure treaded or marine grade and will last many years, we still think it prudent occasionally to apply a re-treatment. I have personal used this treatment on my own housing, and can highly recommend it:
STOPS WATER DEGRADATION -
Forms a water shedding coating stopping water ingression and potential wood rot.
CAN BE APPLIED TO WET WOOD -
No waiting for that elusive day when you have time and the wood is dry.
MICRO POROUS -
Allows the wood to ‘breath’.
Has a milky colour when applied but dries clear, so OK to applied liberally without showing too many brush or run marks.
SUITABLE FOR ANIMAL HOUSING -
And says as much on the label!
A good number of our house builds are made to customer’s specific needs. Therefore if you have a requirement, please ask. The worst that can happen is we say no, but it’s not happened yet!
