FORSHAM REPLACEMENT DOVECOTE ROOFS
I am getting past customers enquire if I could supply them with a replacement roof for the dovecote, they brought from me back when I wore my FORSHAM COTTAGE ARKS hat. To which the simple answer is yes.
The majority of these dovecotes are twenty or more years old (one was 30). Back then, we did not use pressure treated timber because it contained arsenic and other questionable chemicals that I did not want in my workspace. We relied on the use of good joinery grade red pine, and the heavy application of a wood preservative to protect the dovecotes. However, the formula was changed in about 2005, we still use the same joinery grade red pine but now it’s pressure treated.
NEW ROOF FEATURES
The dovecote replacement roof consists of a fully assembled roof cone, including the corner beadings, dressed lead and a new finial...
Facilitates both the positioning and fixing of the new roof.
FITTING THE NEW ROOF
With the cote still standing, the old roof must be entirely cleared away. The mounting plate can then be centred and securely fixed on top of the dovecote body. In turn, the fully assembled roof cone is then centred on the mounting plate, and fixed.
NEW ROOF MATERIALS
Pressure treated, joinery grade red pine.
12mm Marine Grade Ply.
REPLACEMENT ROOF SETS
HEXAGONAL REPLACEMENT ROOF SET:
This is the roof required for FORSHAMS Rochester dovecote which is a hexagonal dovecote on two levels with six nesting bays.
OCTAGONAL REPLACEMENT ROOF SET:

REPLACEMENT ROOF SET OPTIONS
The painted roofs are made from same pressure treated timber. An aluminium base cote is over painted with two sealer, stain blocker, undercoats and topped off with two exterior white coats.
Although the timber we build with is pressure treaded or marine grade and will last many years, we still think it prudent occasionally to apply a re-treatment. I have personal used this treatment on my own housing, and can highly recommend it:
STOPS WATER DEGRADATION -
Forms a water shedding coating stopping water ingression and potential wood rot.
CAN BE APPLIED TO WET WOOD -
No waiting for that elusive day when you have time and the wood is dry.
MICRO POROUS -
Allows the wood to ‘breath’.
Has a milky colour when applied but dries clear, so OK to applied liberally without showing too many brush or run marks.
SUITABLE FOR ANIMAL HOUSING -
And says as much on the label!
